General Poker rules

Poker is generally played in a clockwise direction with the participant seated next to the dealer posting the blind wherever applicable. The game normally commences with the two opponents seated to the left of the dealer posting the small and the big blind. Where a blind is not applicable, the game starts with voluntary betting which is called opening the round. Poker games like five-card stud expect the players to place an amount pre-agreed upon by them or as defined by the poker room into the pot before the start of the game. This bet is referred to as the ante.

On the opening of the round, the contestants can call, raise, check or fold from the poker game. Call is betting an amount equal to the sum placed by the predecessor. A Raise, on the other hand, is placing a higher stake than that of the opponent. A contestant can also check from the round, which means abstaining from betting, or fold which is to forfeit his hand. While playing stud poker in US the players fold by placing the cards face down on the table whereas in UK they fold by handing over the cards to the dealer who places them face up before folding them. The general conduct expects one to wait for his turn before making a call, raise, check or fold at any point of time of the poker game. Playing out of turn is a sign of excitement which might impact the decisions of others.

The basic rules of the game also define the maximum and minimum amount a player can raise during the game. In spread limit the range of betting is predetermined. The size of the bet you can call is at times limited to the amount in the pot at that moment which is known as pot limit. In fixed limit poker, the maximum amount that can be raised in each round is predefined. Where the amount of raise is not restricted except by the amount of chips one has, is a no limit poker.

The winner of the pot is generally judged by the strength of the cards one possesses on the basis of the ranking system. The strength diminishes from royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pairs, pair to a high card. When a player’s chips are less than the bet made by his opponent, he can put the remaining chips in the pot and declare an all-in. When one is declared as the winner in an all-in situation, his win is restricted to the amount he has put in the pot.

With the rules wide and varied, understanding them is necessary before venturing out to a game of poker.
