Poker Strategy for New Players

Poker is not a simple game, but there are few guidelines that can be followed by beginners to avoid making common mistakes. Some of the guidelines to start with are:

Patience – It is advisable to fold early and often. Even expert poker players fold as many as 80% of their hands. The idea is to play only when you have an advantage. But sadly, most of the time, poker players do not have an edge, and this can be seen in the first cards that you get. Folding earlier during a hand is better as the player would have spent only a little of his chips. This also gives a stronger average hand when players start to play. It then becomes much easier to follow second rule.

Know when you are beat – If the hand is strong, there will be a lot of raising involved. But at times, the opponent will just not quit, and will keep raising the stake. It might be the right time to give up, and do not be afraid to fold once you know that you are beat.

Be Aggressive – Raise. When you have less opponents in the pot with you, you should raise, not call. The best option usually is to raise, and then the next best option is to fold, and finally, to call is the worst choice. Needless to say, all these choice depend on the type of hand that you hold.

Try to guess the opponents hand- Beginners usually concentrate too much on their own hand, but they must realize that it is equally important to guess the hand of opponent as well.  A good way to develop this skill is by imagining the strongest had that anyone could have with the dealt cards, them watch their moves, and make your play.

Simplicity – Use simple poker strategies that you can easily handle during play if you are an amateur.  As a beginner, do not try to get very complex with strategy, as the chances are that it maybe too advanced for you to figure out. And, if at any stage you feel that the poker strategy may not be working out, change it immediately.

Once the basics are clear, players can then move over to the higher levels and draw on the experience of professional poker players to improve the game. Real playing experience is important, but reading various poker articles, books and discussion forums can accelerate the learning process.

The basic idea is to stick with the poker strategy till the change becomes obvious and mandatory. The strategy can then be modified so as to suit individual’s playing style. Just put together a simple poker strategy that is made to win and start there.
