Key Poker Strategies

Poker is a game that requires shrewd thinking and an alert mind on the part of the player for a game to be won. Every step taken by a player must be well thought out and highly planned as one false move can lead to the loss of the game. There are certain basic strategies that must be followed while paying the game of poker.

Remaining poker-faced

Care should be taken not to let emotions rule over you at any point of time during the game. An alert mind never leaves room for sentiment and emotion. Any hint of you being on a tilt induces the rest to take advantage of the situation. However, taking a short break from the poker game can sometimes help a player to retain his composure. But when the player is diffident on his ability to keep his emotions in check, he should call it a day rather than risk losing all his chips.

Keeping a record of the game

At the end of every game, the player should take measures to keep a detailed record of the key movements made by him during the game which resulted in his gain. Similarly a record of the mistakes made by him can help him from making the same mistake twice. Documentation of the key observations of the expressions or the moves made by the opposition can give the record for future reference. Every record made will help in pin pointing the trends followed by the player that have to be rectified; it will also reveal the weakness of opponents allowing a poker player to take advantage, depending on the type of trait exhibited and the person responsible for the same.

Remain patient and aggressive

A good player maintains a balance between remaining patient and aggressive. He should observe the momentum of the game and play only where he can be assured of a gain. If the cards cannot provide him with any chance of winning, he should fold and not let his ego ruin his stakes. A good strategist also reaps from his gains whenever a profitable situation arises. For instance, an experienced hand might raise his bet when the blind is low with the sole intention of driving out the opposition from the game. He also takes the chance of raising his bet after the river card has been dealt creating a fear that forces the opposition to quit the game. Bluffing should be done only when the number of poker players is less or when the opposition is weaker.

Also, with many strategies suggested in the game of poker, the proper selection and usage of the right ones requires experience from the part of the player.
