Discipline in Internet Poker

Some Internet poker players usually lose self control and end up wasting money they couldn’t afford.  This costs them a lot, to say the least.  In the end, what results is a grim addiction to Internet poker.  There are many indications of such addiction, but there is also a cure to this.  However, still the best thing to do is to prevent this addiction from even happening in the first place.

Symptoms of Addiction to Internet Poker

Many people agree that addiction to Internet poker is hard to detect.  For one, these people are usually in their homes.  The activity of an Internet poker addict in an online poker site is hard to equate with addiction.  For all the management knows, that poker addict is just like any other poker player.  There is no way either to detect addiction based on physiological symptoms since these players can’t be seen playing face to face with other poker players.

Given the difficulty in detecting online poker addiction, the only recourse is the identification of the problem by the Internet poker’s immediate friends and relatives.  This is under the assumption that the Internet poker is in touch with them.  But this assumption is not baseless since most Internet poker addicts are young adults or people just staying at home.

Common symptoms include immense and noticeable addiction to the computer.  If a person is too much engrossed in the computer 24/7, maybe you have to know what that person is doing the entire time.  Also a symptom is shiftiness or a sudden change of attitude.  This includes an expressed desire to gain more money.

Internet poker addicts usually don’t know their own addiction even if it is told to them straight to their faces.  This is why prior knowledge about the existence of a probable addiction history on your part is necessary.

Preventing the Addiction

Correcting an addiction is usually hard to do but possible.  However, Internet poker addiction can be prevented, and correcting such addiction may not even be necessary.

As a poker player, it is your duty to define your limits in playing Internet poker.  Make sure that you have an allotment as to how much you are going to spend in a session.  It is also helpful to have another person, perhaps a friend or close relative, to monitor this allotment to make sure that you don’t go overboard your limits.

It is also important to understand the basics of the addiction.  By doing such, you are preventing the chances of it happening to you.  One of the symptoms is spending more time than is proper, so make sure that you don’t leave behind your actual work or other obligations.  If you do so, then you are in big trouble.
